No Two Moving Companies are Alike

You’ve found your dream house or job, but now you need to find a discount mover to help you get your belongings to your new area. If you’re from anywhere in Texas, you might already be familiar with the myriad of Houston moving companies in the area. While they’re all likely to offer you as many specials or discounts as it takes to book your business, it’s not always easy to differentiate between the different offers you’ve received.

Interviewing Discount Movers

When you’re on the hunt for a good discount mover, it’s important to remember that no two moving companies are alike. The second most important thing to remember is that cheap movers aren’t necessarily the best movers. There’s always more to consider than simply price. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you interview potential Houston moving companies in preparation for your move.

  • Ask your friends and family for recommendations. If you’re moving for employment purposes, ask your new employer for recommendations as well. You probably know someone who has moved recently, so he or she will likely have a few ideas as to which discount movers are best.

  • After you’ve compiled a list of potential movers, start calling them for information. Take note of how they answer the phone. Are they answering in a professional manner, clearly stating the name of the company or do they simply answer with “movers” or “hello?” Even cheap movers should be professional movers. If there’s any question in your mind, simply move on.

  • Ask if the Houston moving company you have contacted is going to come to your home to give an in-person estimate. It’s very difficult to determine exactly how much stuff a person has to move without seeing it in person. A red flag should be raised in your mind if a mover flat out presents a quote over the phone without coming out to see your home first.

  • Ask your discount mover if the quote is binding, non-binding, or not-to-exceed. A binding quote is a final quote and can not be changed much, if at all. A non-binding quote is a rough estimate based on your mover’s past experiences; however, even a non-binding quote has limitations and the final cost can not be more than 10% higher than the original indication. A not-to-exceed quote doesn’t give you an exact moving estimate, but more of a worst case scenario. In this case your price may end up being lower than quoted, but never higher.

  • Ask the representative at the moving company if he will be doing the work himself or hiring another Houston moving company as a subcontractor to move your home. If the mover says he is using a subcontractor, you have the right to know who that subcontractor will be in advance. This way you can do the same research you did for the original company to determine if you’ll receive good drivers and quality services.

  • Make sure the quote you receive includes all of the fees for moving your household goods. Some cheap movers like to tack additional fees to the quote after they arrive at your home as a surcharge for moving extra large or bulky items. They might even try to charge you extra if they have to go up a flight of stairs or navigate a difficult corridor. Your mover should have asked for this information before giving you the original estimate and should not need to tack these charges on as surprises after the fact.

The responses you receive when you question your discount mover will obviously vary from company to company. Make sure you choose the company who you feel most comfortable with, even if that means paying a few dollars more than you would have with the cheapest guy on your list.
